New training school launches BPI Building Analyst class

April 13, 2009 - A new training school, Building Science Academy, is launching classes for BPI (Building Performance Institute) Building Analyst training in May. The classes will provide training for energy auditors, energy raters and contractors in preparation for the BPI Building Analyst examination. Building Science Academy’s BPI- recognized programs will serve municipalities, utilities and building contractors by providing a simple and seamless solution to compliance with changing regulatory standards.

"While the Economic Stimulus Plan nationally is making monies available for energy audits and building projects that result in energy-savings, there are many other energy efficiency programs being initiated by the State of Michigan and utility companies. Many states are requiring that work is performed to a nationally recognized standard, such as that of the BPI. All of the programs will require some type of energy audit,"; says principal, Kim Phillipi.

A BPI-recognized training program, the Building Science Academy licensed training curriculum was developed by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. (NYSERDA). This training curriculum is being utilized in many states and is accepted as a national standard for energy auditors and contractors.

"We are equally excited that our classes will be available to the unemployed who are looking for a new career. We hope to provide opportunity that not only reduces Michigan's carbon footprint but also creates jobs that will help sustain Michigan's economy," Phillipi says.

The BPI Building Analyst class will be offered in Grand Rapids May 4-9, May 18-23, June 8-13 and June 22-27 and in Detroit June 15-20. Classes in Envelope Training will be scheduled soon, as well.

Each class session includes four eight-hour days of classroom instruction, one eight-hour day of field training and an additional day for the BPI examination. The class is designed to prepare participants for the BPI certification examination.

Sam Flanery directs the Building Science Academy instructional team. Flanery brings more than 20 years experience in the construction trades and deep experience as an energy auditor and trainer. Phillipi, prior owner of testing and engineering firm, Entela (now Intertek), oversees Building Science Academy’s operations and administration.

"Our vision is to lead Michigan as trainers of the building professionals who will enable us to reduce energy consumption, create jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil," Flanery says.
