The White House Council of Economic Advisors estimates that the Recovery Act will create or save 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010. It is estimated that 678,000 of those jobs will be in construction, and that many of them will be jobs in residential energy efficiency retrofit. Local States and jurisdictions are currently assessing their own green jobs potential with the increased assistance in federal funding.
Michigan alone will receive approximately $1 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for energy efficiency and renewable energy. DELEG’s Bureau of Energy Systems is charged with coordinating ARRA funds in a number of energy-related programs including an expanded State Energy Program, Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant Program (EECBG) Program, and Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program. Further details will be made available on the state’s website at www.michigan.gov/recovery.

Nationwide utility companies are being required to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives required by the individual States creating jobs in energy efficiency audits, contracting/retrofits, equipment sales and distribution, manufacturing and many other green job opportunities. In Michigan for example all utilities are offering programs, developed in accordance with Public Act 295 of 2008, the “Clean, Renewable, and Efficient Energy Act” passed by the Michigan legislature and signed into law by Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Oct. 6, 2008.
